44 Celebrity Breakups We're Still Not Over
44 Celebrity Breakups We're Still Not Over
It’s difficult to cope with the breakup of your favorite celebrity couple. No, you weren’t technically a part of their relationship, but it sure felt like it! You had access to their sappy social media posts and all of the magazines and tabloids they were featured in. So, you were invested in their well-being—rightfully so!
So when things go sour between your beloved celeb duo, you get emotional. Headlines that read “separation,” “split,” or “divorce” are cause for panic, especially when they’re published by a reliable source (aka E! News). In defense of celebrities, I’m sure dating in Hollywood isn’t for the weak. Fame, fortune, and romance are tricky—which is why I’m so invested in celebrity couples that are still together. Chrissy Teigen and John Legend, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, and Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are three celeb couples that give me hope.
But unfortunately, there are numerous couples that break our hearts. This past decade has seen more than its fair share of beloved couples that didn't make it. I’ve outlined 44 of the most notorious celebrity breakups that weren’t able to withstand the test of time. You may want to grab a box of Kleenex.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner
The tragic end of Ben and Jen's 10-year marriage was the most devastating power couple breakup of 2015. Despite their separation and the scandalous reports of Ben having an affair with their kids' ex-nanny, the two have put on their best faces and stayed close—they even took their three children to Disney World for Ben's 43rd birthday.
Although there was initial speculation surrounding their separation, as they were seen wearing their wedding bands and taking several family trips together, the two have since moved on and are seeing other people. They continue to co-parent their children.
Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick
Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick's rocky relationship has been well documented on Keeping Up With the Kardashians since 2007. Kourtney's commitment issues and Scott's partying ways have stolen the spotlight on the popular reality TV show since day one. They have three adorable children together, but they never married.
Although the world has watched them almost break up countless times, their official split back in 2015 has been a hard pill for Kardashian fans (and the family!) to swallow. And while they continue to date other people (currently Kourtney has made it Instagram official with Travis Barker, and Scott is seeing Lisa Rinna's youngest daughter), the family continues to tease their inevitable reconciliation on the show (which, sadly, is ending much too soon).
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth
Honestly, I’m still emotional about this breakup. Miley and Liam’s relationship timeline is complicated. The couple made headlines when The Last Song premiered in 2010. They were young and in love and we were here for it. Fast forward to 2014—Liam had proposed, but the engagement was called off.
This breakup killed us. And as if this wasn’t bad enough, the couple found their way back to each other and pulled off a secret wedding in December of 2018. And then there was the infamous split. The two announced their separation in August of 2019—the news hit us like a wrecking ball...
Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield
Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield called it quits in October of 2015—after four years of dating. They met during the casting of The Amazing Spider-Man and became everyone’s favorite on-screen and off-screen couple. It wasn’t until Garfield was MIA at the 2014 Oscars that fans began to notice red flags.
Stone was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Birdman and Garfield wasn’t by her side. Not long after, a source close to the couple confirmed their breakup—their heartbreak was our heartache.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
Whether you love them, hate them, or love to hate them, Kimye seemed like one of those kismet Hollywood couples that would beat the odds. Although their romance only lasted about a decade, it felt like Kimye had been a force in Hollywood for as long as anyone can remember, like Brangelina before them.
The pair met in 2002, and as everyone knows, it was love at first sight for Kanye. Kim, on the other hand, put the rapper in the friend zone for the next decade. In 2012, they took their friendship to the next level and announced Kim's pregnancy in December of that same year. Another decade and four kids later, Kim filed for divorce—after several years of Kanye's public meltdowns. Everyone saw it coming, but it doesn't make the news of Kimye's split any less hard to swallow.
Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum
Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum met on the set of their 2006 film Step Up. In 2009, the couple wed. They were #couplegoals—extremely talented, exceptionally beautiful, and seemingly happy. But in 2018, both Jenna and Channing took to social media to announce their separation. Fans were heartbroken by the news.
The two had been married for nearly nine years and have a young daughter together. Although they assured us that they were “still a family,” it didn’t make their split any easier. Not to mention that Tatum started dating Jessie J shortly after, and Jenna had a baby with beau Steve Kazee...
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt became known to fans as “Brangelina.” They were Hollywood’s power couple—which is why their separation is infamous. Their romance began in 2005 on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith (while he was still married to Jennifer Aniston), and it wasn’t long before they decided to start a family. They adopted three children and had three children together.
Although they weren’t in a rush to tie the knot, their six children were eager for them to wed. In 2014, Jolie and Pitt married. And in 2016, they filed for divorce. All good things must come to an end, I suppose.
Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton
Hollywood’s favorite eccentric couple, Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton, announced their separation after 13 together. The quirky pair met in 2001 while Burton was directing Planet of the Apes. In the following years, they built a life for themselves—a life that many deemed unconventional.
They lived in two adjoining houses in London, which seems odd, but it worked for them—for a time. They decided to split in 2014, but still co-parent their two children and remain close—which makes our grief a little more bearable.
Ariana Grande and Mac Miller
After two years of dating, Ariana Grande and Mac Miller decided to split. The late rapper, who passed away after an accidental overdose in September of 2018, had an ongoing battle with substance abuse. While Ariana tried to support him the best she could, the couple couldn’t make it work.
After his unexpected death, Ariana shared a post about her dear friend: “I’m so sorry I couldn’t fix or take your pain away. I really wanted to.” Their split and his death were devastating to fans.
Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron
In Hollywood, actors often date other actors or celebrities because they understand the implications of intense popularity and fame. If you’ve seen the phenomenon that is High School Musical, it’s likely you’ve fangirled over both fictional couple Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez and real-life couple Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. And it appeared that the couple was as cute off-screen as they were on.
They dated from 2006 to 2010 and were able to lean on one another. But by the end of the four-year of their relationship, it had run its course. They’d understandably outgrown their sweet teenage love. Their split felt like the end of an era.
Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux
Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux were together for seven years and married for two years before announcing their separation. The marriage began with an eight-carat diamond ring (yes, I said eight-carat), and ended with a post-Valentine’s day divorce announcement. But there were lots of super gushy and sweet moments in between that made us love them.
We’re sad that their marriage didn’t work out, but luckily they’re both hot and have a lot going for them. If they can’t find love, is there hope for any of us?
Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler
Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler announced their divorce in April 2020 after spending the first month of quarantine vacationing with their three children. Breaking up during a picturesque family getaway? Everyone was collectively shocked—except for the people who watched Kristin's reality show, Very Cavallari...
Fans of the show saw a different side to the couple's dynamic than what they put out there on Instagram; Jay wasn't super supportive of Kristin's budding career (although she had moved all over the country and stayed home to raise their children before he retired from the NFL), and then there were the affair rumors about Jay and Kristin's then-BFF, Kelly Henderson. Both parties denied the affair, but the damage was clearly done.
Fergie and Josh Duhamel
In May of 2019, Fergie filed for divorce from her husband Josh Duhamel. The couple separated in 2017 after eight years of marriage and the news came as a shock to fans. Although divorce rates are high among celebrities, fans were hopeful that Fergie and Josh would last.
Unfortunately, they didn’t. They couldn’t overcome their differences. Josh’s ideal lifestyle varied drastically from Fergie’s. In the end, her continued fame shadowed the normalcy he desired. We’re still mourning this split.
Kendra Wilkinson and Hank Baskett
I’m not ashamed to admit I love reality TV. And because I love it, I grew up watching Kendra on Top, a show featuring former Playboy model Kendra Wilkinson and her NFL football player husband Hank Baskett. They were married for eight years. During this time, they welcomed two children and focused on their family.
But their marriage deteriorated. Rumors emerged of Hank cheating on Kendra, which complicated their relationship. They decided to separate and their divorce was finalized in 2019. Not only are they heartbroken about the divorce, but so are we.
Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton
Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton were the ultimate country music duo. Their attraction was undeniable. Whether they were performing together on-stage or spending time together off-stage, they were falling for each other.
In 2011, Lambert won a Grammy, Shelton was named Male Vocalist of the Year, and they wed! It seemed nothing could stop these two—until their romance fizzled out. It still hurts to think about this celebrity split. The only good thing that came out of their divorce was new music.
Heidi Klum and Seal
Heidi Klum and Seal's divorce was another celebrity breakup we never saw coming. They married in 2005 after just a year of dating, had three children together (Seal also adopted Heidi's daughter from a previous relationship), and reportedly renewed their vows every year of their seven-year marriage.
The couple announced their separation in 2012, and their divorce took two years to finalize.
Lady Gaga and Christian Carino
All I want in life is to see Lady Gaga happy. And fans thought she was after she announced her engagement to fiance Christian Carino in 2018. She called off her first engagement to her longtime boyfriend Taylor Kinney in 2016 and did the same thing to Christian in 2019.
Although this breakup was upsetting, it’s even more upsetting that this breakup wasn’t prompted by Gaga’s secret love for A Star is Born co-star Bradley Cooper. Maybe in the next life...
Amy Poehler and Will Arnett
This divorce makes me sad. Amy Poehler and Will Arnett announced their split in 2012 and we’re still not over it. The comedic pair had fans feeling downright depressed after their divorce. Because they began feeling more like BFFs and less like lovers, the two decided to call it quits.
They left their nine-year marriage with two little boys and lots of fond memories. I know it’s selfish to wish they were still a pair, but I can’t help it.
Selena Gomez and Justin Beiber
This on-again, off-again couple has been a source of gossip for the last decade. Selena Gomez and Justin Beiber are notorious for their many breakups and makeups. Their romance began in 2010—they were young. But as they aged, the couple became more serious. They would date other people but always find their way back to one another.
Their latest rekindling was in 2018 and it made us super nostalgic. Except it didn’t last for long. Gomez realized that their relationship was toxic and called it quits. Not even two months later, Justin had moved on to Hailey Baldwin—who’s now Hailey Beiber...
Anna Faris and Chris Pratt
Celebrity relationships have their difficulties, but Anna Faris and Chris Pratt seemed to overcome theirs during their decade-long relationship. They wed in 2009 and were blissfully married for eight years before deciding to separate.
When news surfaced they were splitting, the beloved couple broke the hearts of fans. Although their love didn’t withstand the test of time, they have agreed to live within a five-mile radius of one another until their son finishes 6th grade. Their marriage failed, but their co-parenting skills are impressive.
Nia Vardalos and Ian Gomez
If you’re a fan of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, you’ve probably already been burned by the news of Nia Vardalos and Ian Gomez’s divorce. The film was inspired by their romance. Vardalos played the role of Toula and Gomez played the role of Toula’s husband’s best man. The couple’s marriage lasted almost 24 years—which made their separation that much more emotional.
They commented that their romantic relationship morphed into a friendship. I’m just glad they’re still on good terms for their daughter’s sake.
Emma Roberts and Evan Peters
The recent breakup of Emma Roberts and Evan Peters was cause for major upset. The American Horror Story co-stars had a seven-year relationship that lead to an engagement—and an eventual split. They were first engaged in 2014, but were broken up by 2015. They then reconnected and were engaged for the second time in 2017, but called it off for good in 2019.
Their on-and-off relationship may have been problematic, but the public loved them together. Breakups aside, we’re glad that the two stars are taking the time to work on themselves. Who knows, maybe they’ll reconnect in the future!
Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin
Even more memorable than Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's 10-year marriage was the way they announced their divorce. In 2014, the couple announced their "conscious uncoupling," and thus, SNL skits and The Onion headlines were born.
The couple had been extremely vocal about the hardships of marriage, but no one expected these two to ever actually call it quits. They have two children together and have managed to stay a family, going on vacations together pretty frequently.
Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama
Despite their 13-year age gap, Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama fell for each other and never let their age difference affect their relationship. They met in 2010 and were instantly drawn to one another.
Their romance withstood Lovato’s battles with self harm and eating disorders. He lifted her up and stood beside her, even when times were hard. But after six years of dating, the couple announced their split. Fans were crushed because they’d admired their loyalty. Their timing was off, but they still remain friends.
Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt
Will the world ever be over Jennifer and Brad? Probably not. Although it's been an entire decade since they divorced, and both stars have moved on, their breakup is one heartbreak that time will never heal.
The two reunited for a Zoom table read of Fast Times at Ridgemont High in 2020, where it seemed no time had passed between the two, and the internet lost its collective mind.
Selena Gomez and The Weeknd
Selena Gomez and The Weeknd sparked romance rumors in 2017. They had both called in quits with their exes and were spotted kissing in Santa Monica. Fans were excited that both celebrities seemed so happy together. They traveled, made red-carpet appearances, and supported each other’s successes.
They appeared to be a match made in heaven—for a total of 10 months. The actress and singer’s whirlwind romance quickly fizzled out. Fans were blindsided by their split, but are grateful they’ve remained friends.
Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey
Was there any early 2000s couple cuter than Nick and Jessica? The two married in 2002, and their first two years of marriage were documented on the reality show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. But after just three years of marriage, the couple divorced, breaking hearts all over the world.
BTW, anyone know where I can find Newlyweds on DVD?
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon
Although Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon split more than five years ago, we still aren’t over it. And honestly, we don’t know how they’re over each other. They seemed like the perfect couple. After six years of marriage and the birth of twins, the couple decided to call it quits.
Fans mourned their separation. They were admired for how they dealt with Carey’s bipolar disorder and Cannon’s health complications from Lupus. They were warriors for each other during their marriage and still remain close. Their ongoing support eases our breakup blues.
Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake
No celebrity couple will ever be as iconic as Britney and Justin. I mean, they wore matching denim outfits to the 2001 American Music Awards. Nothing says "true love" more than matching outfits, right?
The two pop icons met as kids on The Mickey Mouse Club and began dating in 1999. Justin blames infidelity as the reason for their 2002 breakup, and won a Grammy for his hit "Cry Me a River," which was rumored to be about Britney (and definitely was).
Excuse me while I go listen to "Cry Me a River" on repeat.
Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris
It’s unfortunate that heartbreak inspires songwriting. Taylor Swift had her fair share of breakups (and successful post-breakup hits) but there’s no doubt that her split from Calvin Harris hurt us the worst.
He was so sweet and seemingly innocent when they dated—which made his petty remarks afterward that much more hurtful. Clearly, he was upset about the breakup, but he didn’t have to be rude. Lena Dunham proudly named him her least favorite of Taylor’s boyfriends.
Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson
TV sweethearts Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson never married, but were in a romantic relationship for more than a decade. So, it was a sad day in Hollywood when they announced their split in 2016.
The couple had many admiring fans that were heartbroken to learn that their separation was a long time coming. Their outward appearance had everyone fooled. It’s a bummer they didn’t work out, but they’re happier apart and that’s what matters, right?
Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony
Jennifer Lopez revealed that she knew almost immediately that her marriage to Marc Anthony wasn’t the right thing, but she didn’t want to believe it. The couple split in 2011 and finalized their divorce in 2014, but many fans were upset because they loved them together.
They were from similar backgrounds, both had a love for music and performing, and raised two beautiful kids together. We respect their decision, but we won’t deny we miss the days of Jennifer and Marc.
Irana Shayk and Bradley Cooper
Model Irana Shayk and actor Bradley Cooper confirmed their relationship at the Met Gala in May of 2015. Over the last four years, they’ve fallen in love, bought a house, and had a baby. In the midst of these major life events, Cooper was also cast as the leading man in A Star is Born. Shayk and Cooper were unproblematic—until rumors sparked about Bradley Cooper’s relationship with co-star Lady Gaga.
Shayk call it off and we’re heartbroken for her (even though we ship Gaga and Cooper). Although it’s unlikely this is what ended their relationship, many people believe it is. I mean even I couldn’t deny the chemistry between the two as they performed “Shallow” at the 2019 Oscars...
Adriana Lima and Metin Hara
Adriana Lima and her ex-beau, Metin Hara, only dated for a year and a half, but were envied by fans. They shared sweet selfies and intimate moments on social media, giving fans an insight to their heartfelt romance.
So it came as a shock when Lima dumped Hara and accused him of exploitation. Not only was Lima heartbroken that her relationship ended in this way, but fans were upset that they’d also been fooled by Hara.
Mackenzie and Jeff Bezos
Jeff Bezos is the billionaire CEO of Amazon. He met his wife, Mackenzie Bezos, prior to the founding of the company in 1994. Their love was a whirlwind. The two were engaged within three months of dating and married within six months. Although many thought the couple would be together forever, they announced their divorce in 2019, after more than 25 years of marriage.
They’re no longer the richest couple in history. And this will undoubtedly be one of the most expensive divorces. But it’s a shame that this couple didn’t last. The seemingly normal life they led was refreshing. I guess you can’t always have it all...
Amy and Matt Roloff
Little People, Big World gave fans an inside look at the relationship of Amy and Matt Roloff. And thanks to the reality TV series, fans were sadly surprised to hear of their split. Their different views on commitment sealed their fate.
The couple announced their separation in 2014 and filed for divorced by 2015. They divvied up their property, production companies, and businesses and moved on with their lives. Their both in different relationships today, but it’s hard not to feel nostalgic for the days of Roloff Farms and genuine family fun.
Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder
Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder met on a little show called The Vampire Diaries in 2009 and began dating shortly after. They broke up in 2013, but their characters continued to date until Nina left the show in 2015.
Rumors swirled that Nina left because she wasn't over her ex—who just so happened to get married to another fictional vampire, Nikki Reed (Rose in Twilight)—but she shot down the rumors and insisted she was happy for the newlyweds.
At least we'll always have Elena and Damon's relationship to watch over...and over...
Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe
Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe divorced in 2007 after an eight-year marriage and two children together. They've managed to stay friends and blame getting married too young as the reason for their divorce.
While they weren't a high-profile couple, they did get their Hollywood start together. Ryan helped Reese get her foot in the door by recommending her for the role of Annette in Cruel Intentions.
Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green
Brian is 13 years Megan's senior, and they met when she was just 18. They've always had a hot-and-cold relationship, breaking off their engagement in 2009 and then getting re-engaged and eventually married a year later. News of their separation broke on August 19, 2015, after five years of marriage and two children together. And their relationship continued being hot-and-cold, even after their initial separation (and Megan actually filing for divorce)...
That's right. These lovebirds reunited and gave us all hope that true love does prevail. However, the reunion was short-lived and Megan has been seen and rumored to have started a new romance with rapper MGK.
Offset and Cardi B
Cardi B and Offset began their relationship in 2017, when the couple was spotted out in public together holding hands at the 2017 Superbowl. Hip Hop and Rap fans around the world were delighted that two of their favorites had found happiness together. They even secretly married before Offset publicly proposed to Cardi B at a live performance.
Unfortunately, the paparazzi and cheating scandals rocked the relationship, even from the beginning stages of the relationship and Cardi B filed for divorce in 2020.
Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis
This adorable couple met in 2011 and began dating shortly after. The world rejoiced when Jason popped the question and Olivia said yes in 2012, and then we waited for them to get married... And waited... Then the couple had two children together in 2014 and 2016, and still we waited for the wedding.
Unfortunately, the wedding would never come. Olivia broke it off with Jason after a seven-year engagement and is now very scandalously involved in a relationship with a much younger Harry Styles.
Bruce Willis and Demi Moore
That's right. We're STILL not over this one. Bruce and Demi were the late 80s and 90s ultimate Hollywood power couple. As a matter of fact, the only thing hotter than their marriage were the blockbusters that each kept making, one right after the other. They survived three children, 11 years of papparazzi, and many cheating scandals on Bruce's part.
The two eventually announced their split, with Demi reportedly heard to make the comment, "He wanted his cake and to eat it, too."
Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse
As fans of any teenage drama know, things can get steamy between castmates between the scenes. Riverdale, of course, is no exception to the rule. However, when Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart were discovered to be dating in real life, fans everywhere approved and loved the couple in real life as well as on-screen.
However, they faced paparazzi and cheating scandals (how unlike Hollywood!) until they eventually ended their relationship once and for all in August of 2020 and Riverdale fans everywhere were devastated by the news.
Bill Hader and Rachel Bilson
Okay, okay, so this one was short-lived to say the least, but there was something heartwarming about funnyman Bill Hader getting the beautiful teen-drama actress in the end. It seems just yesterday that the pair announced their new relationship at the 2020 Golden Globes, but nope—it was just last year.
However, both were recovering from recent divorces, which may have had a hand in their amicable split after less than a year. Those darn rebounds just never last!
