The Best Current Tennis Pros in the World, Ranked

Few sports unite people from around the world like tennis. From actors to princesses to regular old folks, everyone loves a good match. Players come from all continents to compete on the world stage at big events like Wimbledon, the United States Open, the Australian Open, and the French Open. 

If a tennis pro wants to become ranked, he or she will participate in tournaments hosted by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), and Women's Tennis Association (WTA). The best results from the last year are pooled into a points system, and the athlete with the most points is ranked the highest. We took a look at current rankings for both men and women and put together a list of the top 15 from each category.  
 

Denis Shapovalov, currently ranked 15th, was born in Israel, but his family moved to Canada when he was a baby. Although he currently lives in the Bahamas, he represents Canada on the world stage. In September 2020, he was ranked at number 10, the third-highest ranking for any Canadian player in history. 

He only has one career singles title but, at the age of 23, expect more from Shapovalov in the future. When he's not playing tennis, he dabbles in writing raps and music lyrics.  

At age 24, Taylor Fritz is the highest-ranked American on the list, currently ranked at number 14. Fritz's parents were also professional tennis players. Born in California, Fritz currently has two career titles under his belt. 

He's known for his dominant serve and his sharp-angle cross-court shots that he can complete with both his backhand and forehand.  

Hubert Hurkacz was born in Poland in 1997, and he is currently ranked at number 13. He first achieved the number nine ranking in November 2021. Hurkacz has a 107-88 singles record and has won four career titles. 

Considered one of the best Polish players of all time, Hurkacz began playing the sport when he was just 5 years old after his mother introduced him to it. 

Italian Jannik Sinner takes the 12th spot at 20 years old, though he's been breaking records for years. After winning the 2021 Citi Open, Sinner became the first teenage ATP 500 champion, and he's the youngest player to have five career titles since Novak Djokovic did it in 2007. 

Sinner is known for his two-handed backhand and topspin.  

Cameron Norrie out of Great Britain reached the top 10 for the first time in April 2022, but he's fallen back a bit to number 11 in May. However, in Britain, he's currently the top-ranked men's tennis player and has been since October 2021. 

Norrie has a career singles record of 129-98, and he has won four career titles. 

Rounding out the top 10 is Italian Matteo Berrettini. The 26-year-old has five career titles and, in January 2022, he ranked as high as number six. 

Berrettini made it to the final of Wimbledon in 2021 and the semifinals of the 2019 U.S. Open and 2022 Australian Open. His career singles record is 121-69.  

At the age of 21, Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime is currently the second-youngest ranked tennis pro in the top 10. At 14, he became the youngest player to win a main draw match. 

By 16, he won a Challenger title. Auger-Aliassime currently sits at the number nine spot, and he has a doubles ranking of 60.

From Norway, 23-year-old Casper Ruud takes the eighth spot. Not only is he making a name for himself on the world stage, but he's also become an excellent representative of his home country. 

Ruud is the first person from Norway to win an ATP title and reach an ATP Tour Masters 1000 final. His father, Christian Ruud, was also a tennis pro who ranked as high as number 39. 

Russian Andrey Rublev has ranked as high as number five, but he currently sits at the number seven spot. He has won 11 ATP Tour singles titles, but he's made a splash playing doubles as well. 

This includes winning three doubles titles and a gold medal in mixed doubles during the 2020 Olympic Games. 

Carlos Alcaraz just turned 19, but he's already climbed the ranks to reach the number six spot. That's after only breaking into the top 100 in May 2021. 

Born in Spain, Alcaraz has won five ATP Tour singles titles, including two Masters 1000s. One of his biggest accomplishments is beating Nadal in the Madrid Open in 2022.  

Currently ranked at number five, Rafael Nadal is another tennis player that has practically become a household name. The Spanish-born Nadal has spent 209 weeks in the number one spot throughout his career. 

He's won 21 Grand Slam men's singles titles, which is a record, and won 91 ATP singles titles.

Stefanos Tsitsipas out of Greece is currently ranked at number four. He was formerly at number three, the highest ranking any Greek player has ever achieved. Tsitsipas grew up playing tennis, starting from age three — his mom was a pro, and his dad was a coach. 

He won his first ATP Tour match in 2017 and appears to have a bright future ahead. 

German Alexander Zverev has been a top 10-ranked tennis player since 2017. The number three spot is his highest ranking to date. 

Zverev won a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and he's won 19 ATP titles in singles and two in doubles. 

Coming in at number two is Russian Daniil Medvedev. He spent a few weeks at number one earlier in the year after becoming the first man outside of the Big Four to hold the world number one ranking since Andy Roddick did it in 2004. 

During the 2020 ATP Finals, he became the first player to ever defeat the top three players in the world. Medvedev has won 13 ATP Tour singles titles. 

Even non-tennis fans may have heard of Novak Djokovic. He's currently ranked at number one with the ATP and has been a tennis superstar for quite a while. He's been considered the best in the world for 372 weeks. 

Born in Serbia, Djokovic has been coached by some of the greatest tennis players of all time, such as Andre Agassi and Boris Becker, and he's won 20 Grand Slam men's singles titles. He's also the only person to ever win a career Golden Masters on the ATP Tour, which he has done twice. 

Rounding out the women's top 15 is Victoria Azarenka of Belarus. The 32-year-old has spent some time at the number one spot during her career. Azarenka has an astonishing singles record of 557-216 and 21 career titles. 

She has also been a successful doubles player with a record of 172-68 and nine career titles. In 2012, she won a gold medal in mixed doubles in the London Olympics and a bronze medal in singles tennis.

Swiss tennis star Belinda Bencic has ranked as high as number four back in 2020, and today she sits at number 14. An admirer of former star player Martina Hingis, Bencic first picked up a racket at the age of 2. 

By age 7, she was training with Hingis's mother. Bencic won a gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, has six career titles, and a singles record of 326-178.

Latvian tennis star Jelena Ostapenko ranked as high as number five in 2018, but today she takes the 13th spot. She's also ranked as high as number 17 in doubles.

In 2017, she became the first Latvian player to win a Grand Slam singles tournament. Ostapenko has five career titles and a singles record of 265-164.

Emma Raducanu is currently the top female player in Great Britain and the 12th-best female in the world. Though she was born in Canada, she was raised in England. She's the current U.S. Open champion as of May 2022. 

Raducanu has an outstanding singles record of 84-34 and one career title. In 2021, she was named "Sportswoman of the Year" by the Sunday Times. 

American Jessica Pegula currently sits at the number 11 spot, her highest achievement to date. She's also ranked at number 28 in doubles and is a three-time Grand Slam singles quarterfinalist. 

Born in New York, Pegula grew up around sports — her parents own the National Football League's Buffalo Bills. She has a career singles record of 312-203 and has won one career title.  

Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain is another player who has been ranked at number one, but she currently sits at number 10. She's also had a career-high ranking of number 10 in doubles. 

Muguruza made a name for herself when she beat champion Caroline Wozniacki in the 2014 Australian Open. Her aggressive style of play has helped her earn a singles record of 442-222 and 10 career titles. 

Coming in at number nine is American Danielle Collins who has reached as high as number eight in the rankings in the past. She's also ranked at number 86 in doubles. 

While playing on the University of Virginia tennis team, Collins won two NCAA singles titles in 2014 and 2016. She has two career titles and a singles record of 194-112. Her playing style has been described as "fearless" and "ferocious."   

Czech star Karolína Plíšková has been ranked as high as number one, but right now she sits at the number eight spot. 

She's also ranked as high as number 11 in doubles. Her singles record is 580-320 with 16 career titles, and she has five career doubles titles. Plíšková is known for her powerful forehand. 

Seventh-ranked Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus started playing tennis on a whim one day. Her father, a former hockey player, drove her to some courts, and she played for the first time. 

The rest, as they say, is history. She has 10 career titles, and her singles record is 278-143. At 6 feet tall, many believe Sabalenka's height gives her an advantage when it comes to her powerful serve. 

Born in Tunisia, number six ranked Ons Jabeur is the highest-ranked Arab player in tennis history. 

She's also the number one Tunisian player in the world. Jabeur began playing tennis at the age of 3 and cites her mother's sacrifices for her to play as what keeps her going. She has a singles record of 366-205 and has two career titles. 

Anett Kontaveit first hit the number five ranking in February 2022, and she is still there today. She's officially the highest-ranked player from Estonia in history. In March 2020, she reached number 95 in doubles. 

Kontaveit has a singles record of 373-187 and has won six career titles. In 2009, she was the youngest player to ever win the Estonian Championships.  

Paula Badosa was born in New York, but she moved to Barcelona, Spain, at the age of 7. She initially wanted to be a model, but tennis won out, and the Spanish superstar is currently ranked number four in the world. 

In April 2022, she was ranked number two. Badosa has three career singles titles, and her record is 294-158.

At age 26, Maria Sakkari is the highest-ranked Greek player in the history of tennis. She's been sitting at the number three spot since March 2022. 

Sakkari is known for her powerful and aggressive style of play. She has one career title and a singles record of 385-249. 

Barbora Krejcíková is from the Czech Republic, and she currently ranks at number two. In 2018, she was the top-ranked doubles player. She has won a Grand Slam singles title and seven Grand Slam doubles titles.

Along with Venus Williams, Serena Williams, and Samantha Stosur, Krejcíková is one of the only four females to win a Grand Slam title in all three different disciplines. 

Iga Swiatek from Poland is currently the top-ranked female tennis pro in the world. At the age of 20, she's the youngest player in the top 10 and the youngest women's singles champion since 2004. 

She's also the only Polish player to win a Grand Slam singles title.  Swiatek has a singles record of 183-49  and has eight career titles.
